The Power of Osteopathy

Osteopathy can help relieve the symptoms of a range of conditions, including:

  • aches and pains
  • hip and knee pain
  • arthritic pain
  • general, acute and chronic backache and back pain
  • neck pain
  • headaches
  • shoulder and elbow pain
  • joint pains and lumbago
  • sciatica
  • muscle spasms
  • sports injuries and tensions

I first became aware of Osteopathy whilst training as a young budding athlete trying to make my way into the professional squash ranks. During this time I had one or two injuries which had been treated unsuccessfully by the therapists I had visited. It was not until I met up with and was treated by an old family friend who was an osteopath, that I became aware of how effective Osteopathy can be. Somehow he always had the knack (as we say in England) of getting me back ‘fighting fit’ within one or two treatments. This experience stayed with me and it was only once I had realised that sport was not a sustainable career option and the corporate world was not my cup of tea that I decided to become a mature student and study Osteopathy.

There are so many facets to my work as an Osteopath that maintain my interest and, as a result, I have never really tried to create a niche in the market for myself by specializing in any particular area. Having treated a variety of patients successfully from newborn babies to the elderly, full-time couch potatoes to full-time athletes and every variation in between, I have not only met thousands of wonderful people but kept my professional life extremely varied and interesting. As any parent knows, having kids is an amazing experience in so many ways. They teach us, change us and inspire us! They were my introduction into treating babies and children. They can open up doors and guide us through life in ways that may have otherwise passed us by. Recently my son’s development into a promising junior golfer has not only shaped my new and renewed sporting life, but is again shaping my professional life. Being able to identify his physical limitations is one area in his golf development that as a dad I can be useful and consequently I am now enjoying developing my first real specialty!

Golf is not a game of ‘perfects’ but the closer you are to perfect, obviously the better you will play! From a physical perspective you have to get a small club head from above your head to connect with a tiny little ball at foot level. I have heard it argued a pointless activity! To do this requires consistent and perfect synchronization of muscle action, good flexibility and mobility through joints; anything that disrupts this sequencing will affect the outcome. A case that springs to mind which illustrates this perfectly occurred whilst attending my first golf assessment and rehab course in Amsterdam. A golf professional’s swing was filmed which showed a consistent fault resulting in a tendency to hit the ball right. When she was assessed using the ‘golf specific physical screening program’ she had chronically short and tight hamstrings. This produced a specific pattern of muscular movements that promoted her particular swing fault. So, our smart talking, smooth Californian lecturer spent 5 minutes treating her with some very easy stretching and muscular reprogramming techniques. When the hamstrings were retested there was improved length and flexibility and to the amazement of all the attending golf professionals, the swing fault had temporarily disappeared and nearly all her golf balls were flying in a straight line!

It is lovely to help serious athletes and golfers to make big improvements in their performance by making small physical changes, but it is equally rewarding to make these small changes and improve everyone’s life whether it is babies with colic or the immobile elderly and everyone else who seeks my help. Osteopathy is a therapy that aims to improve a person’s daily function and quality of life through improving and enhancing the neuro-musculo-skeletal systems. I am planning to use this space to answer your queries and help heighten awareness within the local community as to the benefits of Osteopathy and how it can compliment any existing healthcare that they are receiving.
