Get Anything You Want. Here’s How.

When you wake up in the morning, how do you know to be you?

Unless you’re wearing a pair of pajamas with your name neatly inscribed on the top pocket, or have a name tag clipped to the bed post, how do you know?

Upon waking, perhaps you reach for your phone, or tap into some memories or look at yourself in the mirror as you make your way to the bathroom.  It’s as if for a few seconds, you have the opportunity to be anyone you choose! Instead, you lock yourself back into being the person you believe yourself to be with all the memories from your past that allow you to slide back into your particular identity.

Just for a moment, make a list of all the titles and labels you give yourself that make you, YOU. So this could be mother, father, daughter, son, manager, teacher, tea-maker, cleaner, animal lover, shopper, gardener, driver, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, investor, engineer, technician, friend, acquaintance, cook… You’ll be surprised how many labels you attach to yourself. Also make sure you include labels and titles you’ve had in the past

When you lock into your specific identity, it also locks you into certain patterns of behavior and a way of being. It’s your patterns in thinking and behavior that create your response to circumstances and not the circumstances themselves.

Think of it like driving a car. You first check that the gear is in neutral, and then turn the key in the ignition and that’s how you drive a car.  If you want flowers to grow in your garden, you need to prepare the ground first and then plant the seeds. Or if you want to call a friend, you need to dial the telephone number in exactly the right sequence in order to connect. And if you’ve invited friends round for dinner, to produce a gourmet meal, you will need to buy the ingredients first and follow each step of the recipe in the correct order.

If you are creating the same reality every day maybe the patterns for living your life need to change. It’s like heading off for a beach holiday, yet your suitcase is still filled with hiking boots and sweaters from your last trip. Or having a map of London when you’re going to Timbuktu!

Patterns are everywhere, including the pattern you have for being you. It’s interesting to make a note of what you do every single day and notice the repetition and patterns as well as the results reflected in your life so I highly recommend you buy a little notebook and keep a diary for the next few weeks to start recognizing patterns.

The good news is that you do have the ability to change the software in your brain; to literally change the way you think.

The field of neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to restructure itself after training or practice and this is demonstrated in an experiment conducted by Australian psychologist Alan Richardson. He took a group of basketball players and divided them into 3 groups.

  • The first group would practice 20 minutes every day.
  • The second would only visualize themselves making free throws, and no real practice was allowed.
  • The third group would not practice or visualize.

A few weeks later the results were astounding. There was significant improvement with the group that only visualized; they were almost as good as the group who actually practiced.

So change is possible and as Aristotle said, “‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.’ Aristotle

Once you begin to recognize your patterns you can let old patterns go that no longer serve you so you can get the results you really want.

Hello Charles Thanks for your comments and remember that as you release old patterns, you'll find that what you focus on comes to into being much quicker so you know that that your focus does indeed create a larger reality. Best wishes!

Hmmmm, sometimes written words sound easy but life realities amongst different cultures can make putting the word into a practice difficult. Would you agree with this?

We have tremendous power with the words we CHOOSE to use...to ourselves inside our head and to others! The outer world often reflects back that which we most need to change!

I must admit that while this sounds relatively straightforward, I've been trying to do some of this for what seems like an eternity. Actually for years. Some of what you write above has been realized through this process. I hope it will help others get back on their path too. Cheers
