Skin Peels

Skin peels, also known as chemical peels, use an acid solution to smooth the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers. Skin peels are a popular non surgical cosmetic procedure, and according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) , are one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin.

As we age, dead skin cells do not slough off as easily as when we are younger, causing the skin to appear dull. Light, medium and deep chemical peels help this process by peeling away the skin’s top layer to restore a healthy, luminous and radiant appearance. Although skin peels are used mostly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on your neck and hands. Skin peels are effective in improving:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Skin discolourations, blotchiness, sunspots or brown spots
  • Scars that have made the surface of your skin uneven
  • Rough skin and scaly patches
  • Acne or acne scars

A skin peel won’t treat deep facial lines, tighten loose or sagging skin, remove broken capillaries, change pore size or remove deep scars.

During the procedure, an acid solution is painted on the face like a mask. The higher the concentration (or the longer it is left on), the more layers of skin will be peeled away.  Application can take as little as 15 minutes and may cause some stinging and irritation. Over the next few days, the upper layers of skin will peel, revealing newer, younger and smoother looking skin.

A light chemical peel will leave the skin temporarily brighter; a series of at least four is necessary to get results that can last several months. A series of treatments can reduce age spots, fine lines around the mouth and eyes, acne scars, and wrinkles caused by sun damage or aging. The application may be repeated every few weeks until the desired effect is reached.

Medium or deep chemical peels reach all the way to the dermis, so collagen production is stimulated with one treatment. Fine lines are smoothed out, and skin may even be slightly tighter. Deeper peels initially cause swelling and crusting but ultimately have more dramatic results. Moderate to deep peels may be repeated in six to twelve months.

Fortunately, significant complications from chemical peels are uncommon. Your specific risks for chemical peels will be discussed during your consultation. These may include:

  • Scarring
  • Abnormal healing
  • Unanticipated colour changes or skin blotchiness
  • Eruption of cold sore
  • Tiny whiteheads
